If you visit download.com and search for "codec" or "codec packs" or something like that, you can probably find all the free DivX codecs to make DivX play in Windows Media Player. All you have to do is install them. And if this doesn't work, simply visit DivX.com and download their free player. It has plenty of codecs, too, but the downside is that it is yet another player to deal with.

http://www.free-codecs.com/ is a great site for codecs and players. http://suprnova.org/ (a bit torrent site) also gives really good information regarding the topic (search under forums). Unfortunately, there are so many types (and still not a ‘standard’) it causes problems and will continue to cause problems for the ones that are later not supported. The IEEE has started tackling this issue.
